Our Tea

What's in a cup of tea?
Both green and black tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant. Green tea is steamed immediately after plucking and retains a lighter colour and flavour.

Black tea is allowed to oxidise and is then dried, resulting in a darker leaf colour and more flavour and aroma.

Although it varies by area and climate, the main components in tea are polyphenols, which account for 35-40% percent of its total composition. Caffeine, protein and amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins and minerals make up the balance.

Polyphenols are identified in groups such as catechins in green tea, theaflavins and thearubigens in black tea. It is these groups which are recognised for their anti-oxidant properties, and their capacity to eliminate free radicals (oxidants) within the body. Oxidants are linked to the causes of diseases such as cancer. Tea is virtually calorie free (1 calorie per cup), contains only a small amount of fat, yet contributes over half of the total intake of dietary flavonoids, minerals and vitamins (based on 3 - 4 cups per day):

  • Nearly 16% of the daily requirement of calcium
  • Almost 10% of the daily requirement of zinc
  • Over 10% of the folic acid needed
  • Around 9%, 25% and 6% of vitamins B1, B2 and B6 respectively
  • Tea includes fluoride, traces of vitamins A, K, C, B carotene and B vitamins.

Organic Ceylon (Black)
Taste of real tea. Nature's Cuppa Black tea is organically grown and undergoes five manufacturing stages referred to as withering, rolling, fermenting, firing and sorting.
